Academic Dress

 
Qualified to wear the following eleven academic dresses:
 
Bachelor of Science with Honours in Geology, University of Exeter, Exeter, Great Britain.
Approved to wear a black stuff gown of the Cambridge B.A. shape with a dove grey cloth hood of the full shape, unlined and bound with spectrum blue 2" each side round the cowl and cape. A black cloth mortar board with a black tassle is worn.
 
Master of Science in Structural Geology and Rock Mechanics, Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London, London, Great Britain.
Approved to wear a black stuff gown with long, closed sleeves cut in a forward facing curve at the ends. A hood of black corded silk fully lined and edged on the cape, cowl and neck band with 3/8" of silk of gold (Yellow) is worn. As a member of convocation, an additional facing of one-and-a-half of white silk inside the cowl of the hood is also worn. A black cloth mortar-board with a black tassle is worn.
 
Diploma of Imperial College in Structural Geology and Rock Mechanics, Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London, London, Great Britain.
Approved to wear a black stuff or silk gown of the University of London B.A. shape but having the forearm seam open and being without cord, button or pleats. Hoods are made in the Oxford simple shape. The white silk binding is 6 inches wide on the inside of the hood and 3/8 of an inch wide on the outside. The royal purple velvet band is 1 inch wide and is placed on the white lining 1/2 an inch away from the edge of the hood. The black silk binding on the front of the neck band is 1/4 of an inch on the outside and covers the top and the bottom of the neck band.
 
Doctor of Natural Sciences, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich - Zürich Technical University, Zürich, Switzerland
No academic costume, nor any form of academic insignia, is used by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. However, the Swiss universities prescribe for Doctor of Natural Sciences degree a Swiss or German style black cloth robe with faculty colours shown on the robe in the shape of a scarf-like (epitoge) appendage on the shoulder/neck and as a facing on the front of the robe. For natural sciences the colour is green. A black cloth bonnet with a green tassle is worn.
 
Licentiateship of the City & Guilds of London Institute in Science Laboratory Technology, City & Guilds, London Institute, London, Great Britain.
Approved to wear a black stuff gown of the Cambridge B.A. shape with a white cloth hood of the full shape, unlined and bound with spectrum red 2" each side round the cowl and cape. A black cloth mortar board with a black tassle is worn.
 
Graduate of the Institute of Physics, London, UK
Approved to wear a wear a hood of an Oxford Burgon shape in violet damask fully lined with dark red taffeta. With this hood may be worn the gown of the Graduateship of The Institute which is of black material with open pointed sleeves, each sleeve being gathered at the elbow and held by two violet cords and buttons. The cap shall be a standard square mortar board with black tassel.
 
Chartered Physicist and Member of the Institute of Physics, London, UK
Approved to wear a wear a hood of a Toronto full shape in violet damask lined with violet taffeta.The cowl shall be faced to a depth of 5 cm with dark red taffeta. With this hood may be worn either the gown of the wearer's degree or that of the Graduateship of The Institute which is of black material with open pointed sleeves, each sleeve being gathered at the elbow and held by two violet cords and buttons. The cap shall be a standard square mortar board with black tassel.
 
Chartered Chemist and Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, London, UK
Approved to wear a black stuff gown of the Cambridge B.A. shape (open, plain sleeves) with a Burgon shape hood in grey Russell cord that is fully lined purple silk and with a curved purple neckband. The cap shall be a standard square mortar board with black tassel.
 
Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers, City of London, UK
Approved to wear a royal blue silk gown having the forearm seam open and being without cord, button or pleats. The coat of arms of the Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers appears on the left sleeve.
 
Steward (Junior Warden's and Senior's Warden's) of the Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers, City of London, UK
Approved to wear a scarlet gown having the forearm seam open and being without cord, button or pleats. The coat of arms of the Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers appears on the left sleeve.
 
Research Assistant Professor with Doctor of Natural Sciences degree in the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry, & Agriculture, University of Maine, USA
Approved to wear a black stuff gown of the Oxford bachelor of arts shape with a trim from the Cambridge undergraduate gown with bell-shaped sleeves. A black hood of 4 feet length and 5 inches width of edging lined in golden yellow is worn. The gown is faced on the front and has three bars across each sleve in velvet. A black velvet mortar-board with a golden yellow tassle is worn.
