"The charges in the Arms are a chevron to give the impression of a couple of Himalayan peaks, between the crossed ice-axe and hammer which appear in the logo of the Royal School of Mines at which Dr. Spencer studied; all are enclosed by a bordure to give the impression of a mine tunnel. The Crest is a demi ass, an attribute to St Anthony of Padua, his wife's birthplace, and Anthony being his middle name; it is holding bells, reflecting his cockney origin and his hobby of campanology. The Badge comprises an ice-axe for his favoured pass time, and three bells, for him, his wife and daughter, charged with mullets of different colours to allude to the red, white and green of the Italian flag, and the red, white and blue of the American, Norwegian and Union flags. The motto translates as "the maker of his own destiny".

Dr. Spencer is a structural/petroleum geologist based in Norway, who has published over 200 scientific papers. The subject of his doctorate was the Tectonics of the NW Himalaya, and of his masters degree: Structural geology and rock mechanics of the suture zone between the Indian Plate (Higher Himalaya) and the Kohistan Island Arc, which was structurally mapped for the first time. He is a cockney by birth, his wife Italian and their daughter American. He climbed to the south summit of Everest in 2000."
