      • Training - Attained a baccalaureate or higher degree in a geological science from an accredited university; completed a minimum of 36 semester or 54 quarter hours of geological science, as recognized by the Executive Committee.
      • Experience - Attained a minimum of five years professional-level work experience in geological science, accrued after having satisfied the education requirements.
      • Personal Integrity - Affirmed adherence to applicable professional and ethical standards and provided acceptable references from at least three professional geologists who had personal knowledge of the my qualifications, integrity, and conduct.

Certified Petroleum Geologist (AAPG-CPG)
  • Awarded certification by the Certification Board and Executive Committee of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Elected as a Member of the Division of Professional Affairs having reached a high level of Training, Experience, Personal Integrity, Responsibility, and Professional Ability.
  • Validation as a Certified Petroleum Geologist obtained under reciprocity agreements with The Geological Society of London.
    • Assessment made of:
      • Education and Training - Graduation from an institution of collegiate standing approved by the Division of Professional Affairs Executive Committee, with major study in geology, with a minimum of thirty semester (45 quarter) hours in geology or their equivalent in geological instruction.
      • Experience - A minimum of eight years of full-time experience working as a Petroleum Geologist, where work is directly related to exploration for and/or development of petroleum deposits, during which period the applicant demonstrated professional competence under responsible supervision or while self-employed. One year of experience credit was given for the award of a master's degree and three years of experience credit was given for the award of a doctor's degree. (Experience in petroleum geology was in an applied sense and such experience was broad enough to include application of various disciplines of petroleum geology)
      • Personal Integrity, Responsibility, and Professional Ability - A sustained record of adherence to professional and ethical standards of the Code of Ethics of AAPG. An investigation was conducted by AAPG into the applicant's personal integrity, responsibility, and professional ability.

Professional Natural Scientist (PrSciNat)
  • Awarded professional registration by the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions in terms of Article 11 of the Natural Sciences Professions Act, 1993 (Act 106 of 1993).
  • Validation as a Professional Natural Scientist (Category: Geological Scientist) by the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions guarantees the competence of registered Professional Natural Scientists and Professional Natural Science Technologists and ensures the maintaince of a high level of professional and ethical standards.
  • The South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) ETQA Evaluation Committee recognises the SACNASP as an ETQA Body under agency of the Council for Higher Education (CHE). The Professional Natural Scientist (PrSciNat) qualification was given the highest grade (8) with a NQF of 720 credits.
    • Assessment made of:
      • Training and experience - Attained a Ph.D. plus one year in a natural science profession.

  • "Qualified Person" status recognised by the Exploration and Mining Division (EMD) of the Department of the Marine and Natural Resources, Ireland.

    • Education - Certified Swiss Geologist will be those possessing a Master level degree (or higher level) from a Swiss University (or foreign University) in Geology, Mineralogy or Geophysics.

  • Elected Member of The Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists and certified by the SIPES Board of Directors for professional experience, competence and ethics.
  • Validation as a Certified Independent Professional Earth Scientist after having obtained:
    • A science or engineering degree leading to a career in the earth sciences.
    • 12 years of practice in the field of earth science. The years of experience required was fulfilled by self-employment, as well as employment in industry, and education as an earth scientist. Credit was given for degrees received from accredited universities.
    • Independent and self-employed status with freedom of choice of clients and business associates.
    • Membership reciprocity agreement with the Division of Professional Affairs of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and with the Society of Petroleum Evaluation Engineers necessitates that Sponsors were not required.

  • Awarded certification by the Institute of Physics (UK).
  • Validation as a Chartered Physicist obtained through having obtained a degree in physics or degree in science or engineering containing a substantial proportion of physics; degrees were be accredited by the Institute of Physics or be of an equivalent standard.
  • Responsible experience in physics or its application in academia, industry, teaching in schools and colleges, or wherever skills gained from the study of physics are put to use over the following minimum periods, normally postgraduation, and including at least one year in paid full-time employment.
  • Assessment made of academic qualifications, membership of professional/scientific bodies, experience/occupations, a certified professional report, certified professional documents and recommendations from two chartered Geologists.
  • Approved to wear a wear a hood of a Toronto full shape in violet damask lined with violet taffeta.The cowl shall be faced to a depth of 5 cm with dark red taffeta. With this hood may be worn either the gown of the wearer's degree or that of the Graduateship of The Institute which is of black material with open pointed sleeves, each sleeve being gathered at the elbow and held by two violet cords and buttons. The cap shall be a standard square mortar board with black tassel.

European Physicist (EurPhys)
  • Awarded certification by the European Physical Society.
  • Validation as a European Physicist by the Committee on Professional Qualifications obtained through completion of a minimum total period of seven years of professional formation, including: at least three years of university education in physics or in a physics-related discipline to an academic level acceptable to the Committee on Professional Qualifications; at least two years of responsible post-graduation experience which may include a period of training; at least two years of additional university education and/or appropriate post-graduation experience. The initial phase of post-graduation experience included training and an expected demonstration for a capacity for independent judgment in work related to physics or its application is necessary. The nature of the experience included research, project management, the supervision and training or others and safety management. A demonstration of an awareness of responsibility to the public, when this is implicit in the nature of the work, was shown.

  • Validation as a Chartered Scientist obtained through completion of a programme of study leading to a Masters degree and having at least four years postgraduation level experience in the practice, application or teaching of science, of which two were at an appropriate level of responsibility and, for a minimum of two years immediately prior to the application, had carried out appropriate professional development commensurate with the level of attainment. Membership of a learned and professional society, which in turn was a Member Body of the Science Council that has achieved Licensed Body status, was also required.
  • The designation was available only to those scientists who demonstrated the advancement or application of science and who also stayed up-to-date in their scientific field. Candidates were also able to demonstrate the benefit of their work to the wider community.
