- Abstract:
- Suture zones are boundaries between crustal
blocks carried on two different tectonic plates that were subsequently
juxtaposed by plate motions. As such, they are sites of former
oceans that play an important role in our interpretation of the
geodynamic evolution of modern and ancient orogenic belts, especially
with respect to their paleogeographic reconstructions. As many
different collisional geometries lead to numerous types of suture
zones, this session aims to discuss various topics relating to
suture evolution such as (1) Suture Zone geometry and characterisation;
(2) Ophiolite obduction and preservation; (3) Structural evolution
of suture zones through collisional processes; (4) Examples of
Modern Suture Zones (e.g., Himalaya, Alps) and (5) Examples of
Ancient Suture Zones (e.g., Variscan, Caledonian, Proterozoic,
Archean).
