Awards recognise community's outstanding achievers East End Life, p. 16-17, 27th May, 2002 http://www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/templates/news/detail.cfm?newsid=604 [Humphrey Long taught at Raine's Foundation from 1963-1992]
THE unsung heroes of Tower Hamlets received the recognition they deserved when they were awarded the Tower Hamlets Golden Jubilee Civic Awards. The borough's civic awards recognise the outstanding services and achievements of local residents, workers and students. They were presented for five categories: outstanding service to the community, credit to the borough through sporting, artistic or cultural achievements, improved the quality of life for local people by providing services beyond what they are paid to do, benefited the local community through success in business and in community involvement. The ceremony, which was hosted at the House of Commons in Westminster, was attended by local MPs Oona King and Jim Fitzpatrick, the Deputy Lieutenant for the Queen representing Tower Hamlets John Ludgate, and out-going mayor of the borough Lorraine Melvin.
Speaking at the awards, which were the last public event for the mayor before she ended her term of office, Ms Melvin said: "It was absolutely phenomenal to read these applications. It was hard not to say yes to everybody. "The people who won these awards do things from their heart, and that is very touching." Oona King, MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, told the award winners: "It's fantastic that we are here to celebrate the unsung heroes and the work that they do. So many of you here tonight deserve so much more praise than you will ever get."
Teacher at Raine's Foundation School Humphrey J Long was singled out for his continuing work as a basketball coach at the school. Under Mr Long's guidance the school has reached 20 national finals winning 14 times, more than any other school in England. Claire Rudd Copyright © 2002 EastEnd Life |
