Former Raine's Foundation School Physical Education teacher Humphrey J. Long is to be awarded a Tower Hamlets Golden Jubilee Civic Award at the House of Commons on 20th May, 2002. The Tower Hamlets Golden Jubilee Civic Awards Scheme has been running for three years and is an opportunity for Tower Hamlets Council to thank people who live, work or study in the area and who have made a contribution to improve the quality of life for others. The Queen's Golden Jubilee award includes a special commendation for an outstanding person who has dedicated 50 years to helping others. Humphrey J. Long has brought credit to the borough through his coaching achievements and by having made an outstanding contribution to the fields of education, sports (especially Basketball) and community service. He is widely regarded as one of the most distinguished coaches in his field and he has successfully managed to be actively involved in education at both the secondary and tertiary levels. He has voluntarily coached and supported athletes for nearly 50 years and his services to sports and education have been exceptional. Humphrey Long is indeed one of the rare examples of school teacher who has gained the respect for literally thousands of pupils that he has taken upto international standards of recognition. |
