world of sport
East End Life, Issue 434,
p. 27, 18-24th November, 2002

- WHEN it comes to sporting excellence, Raine's
Foundation School has once again proved itself in a class of
its own.
-
- Over the past 12 months, its footballers,
athletes, basketball and rugby players have been gathering trophies
at a staggering rate, pushing the school's name around the country.
-
- Raine's has long had a big reputation in
basketball, and its current crop are living up to the tradition
which has seen 15 national titles since the 1960s.
-
- This year it was the turn of the under-13
team to fly the flag as they won the English National Passerelle
Basketball Championship. The under-15 team also reached the final.

Shooting
stars
- On the back of their success with the school
David Ajomobi and Tisean Jeffers were selected for England.
-
- Another to gain international honours was
footballer Adrian Pettigrew, who was selected for the England
under- 16 team.
-
- Adrian, who is on Chelsea's books, was a
member of the school's under-16 team that won the prestigious
London Cup. The under-12s showed there is plenty of budding talent
too, when they reached the semi-finals.
-
- Raine's were also the Nike 3 v 3 London competition
runners-up.
-
- Not to be outdone, the girls footballers
also enjoyed some fantastic results, remaining undefeated in
the under-13 Tower Hamlets League and winning the Leyton Orient
Cup. The under-15s were runners-up.

Trail blazers
- The under-13s, many of whom train with Leyton
Orient, also reached the fourth round of the Coca-Cola Girls
National Football Cup.
-
- In athletics, Raine's continued to dominate
at many levels. They were the under-12, under-13 and under-15
borough champions and were overall London athletic champions,
winning the Simmonds Cup in the under- 12, under-14 and under-15
categories.
-
- Ten athletes were chosen to represent London
in regional competitions, while Leon Herbert reached the national
qualifying standard in the long jump, representing London at
the England Schools Competition.
-
- Raine's were also the junior and intermediate
regional winners of the TSB national competition, with the junior
and intermediate girls being the regional runners-up.
-
- The junior boys, junior girls and both intermediate
teams were the South of England Cup finalists in the TSB national
competition. Although athletics, basketball and football dominated
the year, there were also notable successes in other sports.
-
- Raine's were the Inner London Hedon Cup under-14
rugby winners with five players chosen to represent Middlesex.
-
- The under-12 borough cricket championships
ended in another trophy for the school while two trampolinists
were chosen to represent London.
-
- The school's headteacher Paul Hollingum put
this year's achievement into a historical context: "Raine's
Foundation School has always been one of the top sport schools
in the borough.
-
- "Our teams are constantly putting us
into the spotlight, especially with their regional and national
level of achievements. We aim to continue this in the coming
year."
