YOUNG people from the borough have been finding out what life - and study - is like at university.

The Excellence in Cities scheme organised visits to Sussex and Oxford universities to encourage students to consider going on to further education or university.

Ninety year 10 pupils from eight secondary schools went to Oxford University and took part in events during higher education week.

At Merton College and Lady Margaret Hall they took part in a higher education quiz, a scavenger hunt around the university, dined in one of the canteens and a had tour of the university with some undergraduates.

Seat of learning

The scavenger hunt involved students armed with disposable cameras and worksheets answering questions and taking pictures about the university and city.

The eight schools involved were Bethnal Green Technical College, Blessed John Roche, Bow Boys, Langdon Park, Morpeth, Oaklands, St Paul's Way and Stepney Green.

Students from three secondary schools - Central Foundation, Raine's Foundation and Oaklands - visited Sussex University for an exclusive one day event entitled Science and Engineering Uncovered.

They were able to take part in workshops run by various departments covering issues such as pollution and our world, exploring the universe, DNA, chemistry and engineering. Pupils then had to prepare a presentation on their particular workshop.

New challenge

Alan Watts, the Excellence in Cities co-ordinator, said: "The feedback returned from the students is really promising. A majority of them said that they would consider university. That's precisely the aim of Excellence in Cities.

"We need to keep informing and raising students aspirations that going to university is not out of their reach."

One student from Bows Boys wrote: "I always had the thought of university in my head, but now I want to work a bit harder so that I can definitely achieve this."
