- TOWER Hamlets secondary schools have increased
their top GCSE results at the fastest rate in Britain, with a
huge nine per cent increase.
-
- Results published last week by the Department
for Education and Skills show that 44 per cent of students achieved
five or more top grade GCSEs in Tower Hamlets last year.
-
- And the most improved school in England is
here too. Sir John Cass in Stepney has increased its top GCSE/GNVQ
pass rate by an astounding 33 per centage points.
-
- This double success for the borough's secondary
schools follows years of rapid progress in primary schools -
from 1998 to 2002 our primary schools were the fastest improving
in Britain.
-
- At Sir John Cass Foundation and Red Coat,
a mixed comprehensive, 69 per cent of pupils got five or more
top A*-C grades in last year's GCSEs, almost double the 36 per
cent figure achieved in 2001.
GCSE
achievers
-
- Sir John Cass is a specialist language college,
and integrates languages with its new GNVQ science and business
courses.
-
- It is one of several success stories in Tower
Hamlets. Three other schools - Oaklands, Morpeth and Mulberry
- already achieve GCSE results at or above national levels.
-
- Another three - Bishop Challoner, Raine's
Foundation and Stepney Green - achieved close to these levels.
-
- Stephen Grix, Tower Hamlets' director of
education, said "This is a very impressive achievement and
results from hard work and commitment across our schools.
-
- "We will continue to aim high - our
young people are keen and full of potential, and they need and
deserve success."
-
- Lead councillor for education Abdul Asad
is delighted: "We are succeeding in overcoming the disadvantages
and obstacles many of our children face, because of students'
dedications and our commitment to working with them, with schools
and parents.
-
- "These results are excellent news for
everyone in Tower Hamlets, and for all our children."
-
- Tower Hamlets education was one of the council
services praised in December's Audit Commission comprehensive
performance assessment.
-
- The council received a "good" overall
score, the second-highest of five performance categories, and
was praised as an improving council with a clear sense of direction,
skilled political leadership and a strong corporate management
team.
