All Reading Champions

Paul Blum is a Deputy Head and SENCO at Islington Green School. He is also a writer of fiction for children with special needs. Paul has been nominated as a Reading Champion by two pupils, Fayma Nessa and Michael Rodriquez, from Raine's Foundation School in London, where he used to work. Paul has written a series of books called The Extraordinary Files and a literacy workshop book The Chelsea Bunny, with his pupils' input and illustration, as an aid to help children enjoy reading.

Michael Rodriguez writes of The Chelsea Bunny: "This book is aimed at helping children in year 7 and 8 with both their English literature and language, and I believe it does this very effectively. The tasks are made more enjoyable by the unique story itself."

Fayma Nessa writes: "This unique book is aimed at boosting reading skills and lifts the barrier of boredom in learning. If this doesn't motivate boys to enjoy English then nothing else will."

Q: What memories do you have of reading or being read to when you were younger?

A: "My Mum used to read to me. I remember it especially when I was ill and off school with a hot headed temperature."

Q: Can you name a book(s) that you particularly liked when you were younger?

A: "C.S.Lewis' The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe because of its imagination and fight between good and evil."

Q: What do you get out of helping children with their reading?

A: "As a teacher I see day in and day out that reading is the most vital skill for all school lessons. Without it you don't engage."

Q: How do you encourage boys and young men in particular to read?

A: "By trying to make it fun and exciting - so that means engaging their interest by talking about the issues in the text as well as reading it."

Q: What rewarding moments stick in your mind?

A: "Moments when some very restless and excitable boys have calmed right down and are 100% focused on their book."
