RAINE's Foundation School in Bethnal Green now offers students the opportunity to study AS and A2 level law, sociology and accounting - through video. Originally the school introduced Moorhouse Black's tutoring by video conference as a way to offer GCSE Latin to gifted and talented students. It works by using an advanced video conferencing system in which students have weekly face-to-face tutorials with a teacher, who could be anywhere in the country. Each student receives course work that has been specially developed and follows the specifications of an acredited body. The tutor is available via email, telephone and fax for help and feedback. Raine's student Gilroy Gapare, 17, from Bethnal Green said: "When I started the course, I was fascinated that our tutor was teaching us from her home in North Wales, but I soon got used to it and I am now very comfortable with this method of study. "Using the video really makes you concentrate on the lesson and teaches you self-discipline and to organise your time to get the most out of your studies." Gilroy is studying Accountancy at AS level with Moorhouse Black as well as maths, chemistry and economics through the normal channels. Headteacher Paul Holinghum said: "Using this solution has given the students the opportunity to study subjects that we would otherwise not be able to offer, taught by experienced tutors who are specialists in their fields."
