Jo's a whizz with the kids - Raine's manager's personal mission East End Life, Issue 448, p. 28, 17-23 March, 2003 http://www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/templates/news/detail.cfm?newsid=1438
ANOTHER week nearer the Flora London Marathon and more intrepid local runners are contacting us about their reasons for tackling the gruelling event. As promised we will bring you a selection of the stories behind just some of the names joining the masses on April 13. Leading the way this week is Jo Skuse, a 33-year-old learning resources manager at Raine,s Foundation School, Bethnal Green. Jo has been in training since November after completing the 5 km Run for Life last July. She is running for Whizz Kidz, a national charity that aims to give disabled children and young people the same kind of mobility many of us take for granted. Jo is hoping to raise money so that the charity can provide specialised sports mobility equipment such as wheelchairs and tricycles. "It,s a cause I believe in, said Jo, who is targeting £1,500. She has already raised a substantial amount through selling a Valentine Day's Message Magazine at the school and by organising a fund-raising party. She is seeking further sponsorship to help achieve her target. "Running the marathon, for me, is going to be a personal challenge, but I have enjoyed the training and have been injury-free so far. I am looking forward to the event immensely. Our second featured runner this week is 23-year-old Ellie Oatham, currently working as a teaching assistant at Stewart Headlam Primary School in Bethnal Green. She has set her sights on raising £1250 for WellChild the UK,s leading medical research charity for sick children. The money raised will go to help fund further research into fighting childhood diseases such as cancer, eczema, asthma, diabetes and meningitis. "The money I raise by running the marathon will go towards what I think is a brilliant cause ultimately helping to make the lives of children better. Adela Bamber is having to run alone after her son pulled out through injury but then again she is a seasoned runner having completed the course in both 1998 and 1999. As well trying to bring down her time, Adela, who lives near St Katherine,s Dock, will also be raising money for the Poole Hospital Cardiac unit. Sam Deane last run a race 20 years ago when he was still at school, but he is taking the plunge to raise cash for the charity Phoenix House, an organisation dedicated to supporting families overcoming the problems associated with drug addiction. Last but not least this week is Soleman Hussain from Globe Town who is running the race with his friend Nazrul Mannan. They are collecting on behalf of the Federation of London Youth Clubs. If you want to sponsor any of the named runners, contact the East End Life office on 7364 4854. Copyright © 2003 EastEnd Life |
