Drive to improve A levels East End Life, Issue 452, p. 5, 7-13 April, 2003 http://www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/templates/news/detail.cfm?newsid=1502
A level results in Tower Hamlets are slightly better than last year - and there are ambitious plans to improve them much faster. There was a 15 per cent increase in number of Tower Hamlets students going to university in 2002. There were spectacular achievements in individual schools and colleges. Director of the sixth form college at Tower Hamlets College Ken Warman said their maths and chemistry results were "tremendous". One student, Mohammed Ebadul Haque, gained grade As in chemistry, biology and physics, and a merit in the chemistry advanced extension test. The good news is part of a determined drive to further improve A level results so all students who are able to get these important qualifications. By tracking all students who got five or more GCSE A*-C grades in 2000, the council knows their A level results have improved. As part of an action plan, the council want to ensure that after the most rapid increases in primary school results in 2000-1, and in secondary GCSEs last year, it can now start to show better results at A level. Head teachers and college sixth forms are working together to pool their strengths and resources, and teaching quality is rising through training, observation and support. The aim is to boost results and publicise the range of A levels and other sixth form provision so that all students can find the course they want in Tower Hamlets. Lead councillor for education Abdul Asad said: "We will raise our attainment at A level as we are at GCSE and in primary schools." Eileen Short Copyright © 2003 EastEnd Life |
