Teamwork the key as Raine's retain their trophy East End Life, Issue 455, p. 31, 28 April-4 May, 2003 http://www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/templates/news/detail.cfm?newsid=1572
RAINE'S Foundation School's under-16 football team have won the London Cup for the second time, beating Salesian College 1-0 in the final. Raine's, who only conceeded one goal in the six games they played in the tournament, dominated the game from the start and won through a goal by Adrian Pettigree. Physical education teacher Sean Reed ascribed the win to a strong defence and a great team spirit. He said: "The team is very strong and, although they weren't the best team in the cup, they are all good friends, work hard for each other and work well as a team, which is how they managed to win." Raine's also won the London Cup last year. The school's under-14s basketball team has also had success, reaching the finals of the National Schools Basketball Competition and finishing in fourth place. Dr David Spencer, publicity officer and foundation governor of the school said: "Raine's school has a good reputation for sport. There is an enormous amount of raw talent in east London that, history has shown, produces a fantastic number of sportsmen and women. "However, this would be meaningless if it were not for the dedicated attitudes of Raine's physical education teachers. "They follow a succession of teachers who have brought the school to the forefront of sporting achievement over the last 40 years in London, if not England." Mr Spencer also cited the hard work, discipline, good conduct and loyalty that the school teaches their pupils as another contributor to their success. Copyright © 2003 EastEnd Life |
