County record breakers East End Life, Issue 458, p. 8, 19-25 May, 2003 http://www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/templates/news/detail.cfm?newsid=1640
Mile End Stadium played host to some of the best athletes in Middlesex last weekend when it held the County Championships for the second year running. The prestigious weekend-long event was supported by Victoria Park and Tower Hamlets Athletics Club and there was plenty for the local club to celebrate. With 39 medals, including 14 golds, there was proof aplenty that the club is now a force to be reckoned with. Three athletes from the Tower Hamlets club achieved championship bests. In the under-13 girls Millie Zah produced a superb run to win the 70m hurdles while in the under-15 boys Jerome Paul set a new record of 11.91 metres in the triple jump. Jerome also won the 400 metres in 55.6 seconds and was second in the long jump in 5.26 metres. Star athlete Symone Belle, competing in the seniors rather than the under-20s, also re-wrote the championship record books with a stunning performance in the 100m hurdles, clocking a time of 14.2 seconds. Symone was also runner-up in the 100m, despite only a short warm-up and a testing headwind. Caryl Whittaker began the club's medal spree on Saturday when she clocked a personal best of 52.2 seconds to win the 300m hurdles. The highlight of the weekend was arguably the under-20 men's 100m, which featured four of the country's top athletes in that age group. Mono Miah, who lives in Tower Hamlets but runs for Woodford Green, was joined by Rikki Fifton and new Tower Hamlets member Gibril Bangaru. Fifton, the former Bow Boys pupil, steamed into the final with a 10.8 second heat into a strong wind. The final was a dramatic affair, with five false starts adding to the tension. With two of the main contenders disqualified, Miah looked to have the title in the bag but a storming final ten metres from Bangaru snatched the gold in 10.8 seconds with Miah and Fifton both clocked at 10.9. Another great sprinting performance came from the club's Richard Alleyne a member of Alf Vickers' Canary Wharf Hurdles squad as he took victory in the senior men's 100m hurdles. There were impressive displays in the longer distances too, with Tim Grose second in the senior steeplechase. In the under-13 girls Maxine Salter-George was third in the 1,500m. The under-15 boys provided more encouragement for the club with Jayden Ali winning the pole vault and Jahangair Sumadi sprinting to gold in the 100m. Maria Ayoola took bronze in the under-17 200m while in the under-20s Abdul Buhari took gold with Darren Clark the bronze. Abdul was also second in the long jump. Zerlia Duah took another silver in the under-17 800m. Perry Drayton was first in the under-15 girls 800m while in the same age group Elizabeth Ali was third in the 100m. Andrew Ali managed a couple of silvers in the under -13 sprints while Louis Blake was also a silver medallist in the javelin. Copyright © 2003 EastEnd Life |
