STUDENT Melissa McIntyre from Raine's Foundation School in Bethnal Green and a student from Tower Hamlets College threw questions at the mayor of London Ken Livingstone.

In an event based on the mayor's monthly Question Time, a panel of representatives from schools and colleges across the capital questioned his role as London mayor.

It was also the event where Mr Livingstone made his controversial comments about US president George Bush as he answered questions about the war in Iraq. Other subjects touched on included life in the capital, transport, the congestion charge and education.

The debate was chaired by newcaster Krishnan Guru-Murthy, a former presenter of Newsround, and was organised by the mayor and the Institute for Citizenship.

Mr Livingstone said: "The response we have had from young Londoners is tremendous, showing how well informed they are and how concerned they are about the way the capital is run.

"Young Londoners have a major stake in our city and I am delighted to have this opportunity to listen and respond to what they have to say.
