- On Friday 1st November, 2002, 47 Year 11
students from Raine's Foundation School were given the unique
opportunity to share and experience the poetry studied as part
of their GCSE English course, along with some of Britain's greatest
contemporary poets.
-
- Admist the grand surroundings of Westminster
Central Hall, Raine's Foundation students were treated to a rock
and roll display from poet John Cooper Clarke, a poetry reading
in rap form by West Indian poet John Agard as well as several
other highly enjoyable yet educative readings from the poets
Simon Armitage, Carole Ann Duffy, Moniza Alvi and Gillian Clarke.
-
- All of the named poets feature in the students
NEAB (Northern Examinations and Assessment Board) Poetry Anthology,
and therefore such an opportunity as this provided Raine's pupils
with a rare auditory and hands-on experience.
-
- In addition to all of this, the Chief Examiner
for NEAB English, Tony Childs, gave a talk on how to write effective
exam essays.

- It was an enjoyable day for all. "Students
were rapidly taking down notes and quick to interact with and
question all poets" said Elizabeth Smith, an English teacher
at Raine's Foundation School. However, surely the last word must
go to the Raine's students involved in the day. "We would
highly recommend the conference" said Amie Russell and Jay
McCaddon. "We never realised that poets could be so amusing
and interesting. Suddenly our poetry exam questions don't seem
so daunting!"
