Gateway to a University Education |

Raine's Foundation School has sent over 600 pupils to university in the past 30 years. Former students have gone on to take degrees in subjects ranging from Accounting to Zoology. It also has the remarkable track record of having 15 students gain entrance into Oxbridge (Oxford University and University of Cambridge) over the past 30 years with five pupils having gone up to Oxford or Cambridge in the past 4 years alone. Last year, 34 students went onto higher education - a record number. Successful university entrance applications are constantly increasing.
Raine's Foundation School has, for many years, had a successful sixth form, consistently gaining high standards and results. The school prides itself on providing personal support and opportunities to challenge and develop young people. Over 25 subjects are offered at either A or A/S Advanced level. To encourage students to continue with their university education, support is offered from the Raine's Foundation Trust, a registered charity established by a Trust Deed incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1780. Every year, six Raine's students going onto higher education are given Bursaries each worth £1,500 over three years. The Trust also administers the Henry Raine Foundation Award and the Millie Gluckstein Award, additional funding of £1,000 to the boy and girl thought most deserving by the teaching staff who is about to enter University. A Trustees Fund also sets aside £7,000 to provide further assistance to Raine's pupils in Higher Education. Roger Hadow, Clerk to the Raine's Foundation Trustees, emphasises that financial support for higher education is one of the main purposes of the Foundation: "University education is getting more expensive - the Trust aims to help as much as it can." This year, 34 students have submitted application
forms to apply for a university education after leaving Raine's.
Helen Ruskin, 17, from Bethnal Green is aiming to become an Early
Years (3-8 year old) Teacher and has applied to some of the top
Universities in London. Sarah Dirs, 17, from Bow, has also recently
submitted her UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service)
application to take a degree to qualify as a Primary (7-11 year
old) Teacher.
Headteacher Paul Hollingum affirms that a Raine's education is a gateway to those seeking a higher education: "Both historically and currently, Raine's Foundation School provides a sound springboard for our students who want to continue their studies. We are getting students into the best universities in the country reading a diversity of subjects. I am particularly pleased when I learn our students are applying to become teachers." |
