Raine's Foundation School in Bethnal Green, London is proof that embracing new technology and teaching methods not only compliments traditional forms of learning but also expands opportunities for students.

Using an innovative learning solution, provided by distance learning company Moorhouse Black, the school now offers students the opportunity to study challenging and unusual subjects at AS and A2 level that it would otherwise be unable to offer using traditional teaching methods.

The school originally introduced Moorhouse Black's tutoring by video conference as a way to offer GCSE Latin to the school's gifted and talented students, but it soon saw the benefits of the service and now students can study AS and A2 level law, sociology and accounting in the same way.

But how does it work? Using an advanced video conferencing system the students in a classroom at the school have weekly 'face to face' tutorials with a tutor who, as the system has no geographical restrictions, can be based anywhere in the country. The tutors are subject specialists and their skills in tutoring via video conference ensure that tutorials are dynamic and effective. Each student receives course work that has been specially developed by Moorhouse Black to compliment this method of study and all courses follow the specifications of one of the accredited bodies. In addition to the video conference tutorial each student undertakes an element of supported self study and their tutor is available via email, telephone and fax for help and feedback.

"I am very pleased to have the opportunity to study Accounting at school, as I want to know more about the world of business" says Raine's student, Gilroy Gapare, 17, from Bethnal Green. "When I started the course I was fascinated that our tutor was teaching us from her home in North Wales, but I soon got used to it and I am now very comfortable with this method of study. Using this method really makes you concentrate on the lesson and teaches you self-discipline and how to organise your time to get the most out of your studies." Gilroy is studying Accountancy at AS level with Moorhouse Black, as well as Maths, Chemistry and Economics by the traditional method.

"Raine's has a successful sixth form with students consistently gaining high standards and record numbers of students going on to higher education" says headteacher Paul Hollingum. "We pride ourselves on providing opportunities to challenge and develop young people and this includes being able to offer over 25 subjects at either A/S or Advanced level. Using the Moorhouse Black solution has given students the opportunity to study subjects that we would otherwise not be able to offer, taught by experienced tutors who are specialist in their fields."

"In the current climate it is often difficult for schools to recruit subject specialists and this can restrict the choice of subjects many schools are able to offer at A level" says David Black, Director, Moorhouse Black Limited. "With our method the school has the benefit of a subject specialist when they need them, without having to recruit a full time member of staff".

Raine's Foundation School

Raine's Foundation School is a highly successful, inner city, voluntary-aided comprehensive located in Bethnal Green. This year the school has been included in the list of the top 60 most improved schools in England.

The school was founded by Henry Raine, who was a wealthy brewer who lived from 1679 -1738 in the then semi-rural hamlets of Wapping and Stepney. In 1719 he allocated part of his wealth to establish a school which was to provide education for a hundred local pupils, fifty boys and fifty girls. The school has developed and has continued through to today on two sites. The lower school site (years 7 & 8) is in Old Bethnal Green Road and the upper school site (years 9-13) is in Approach Road, Bethnal Green.

The school boasts more than its fair share of pupils who have gone on to achieve success and recognition in their chosen field. A few examples are Phillips Idowu, Britain's number two triple jumper and Commonwealth Games Silver medallist; Simone Callender, Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist in Judo; Ronnie Scott OBE, jazz musician; Steven Berkoff, actor, director and playwright; Mildred Gordon, former Labour MP for Bow and Poplar; Norman Gillier, journalist and sports writer, "the Original Ghost Writer of Fleet Street" and Leonard Fenton actor, who is perhaps best remembered as Dr Legg in Eastenders.
